Tap AAC

Best AAC apps for autism: how to choose, what they cost, and how to set one up

No one app suits every autistic child. The right one stays with them all day, keeps every word in the same place, and costs what you can keep paying. On an iPad, Proloquo2Go ($249.99), LAMP Words for Life and Speak for Yourself ($299.99 each) are the well-known choices. On Android, Avaz, CoughDrop and Tap AAC (ours, $29.99 once) are full picture apps, and Cboard and Weave Chat have free versions. For someone who spells, Speech Assistant AAC or Spoken costs far less.

We make Tap AAC, and it is one of the apps on this page, so read what we say about it with that in mind. It runs on Android only, so on an iPad it isn’t an option at all, and we say where another app fits better. Every price is the store’s or the maker’s own, checked on October 30, 2026.

What matters most for an autistic person

A speech-language pathologist (SLP) compares apps against the person, never against a ranking: the symbols, the layout, how they select, the voice, how portable it is, room to grow, what the person prefers, and the cost.1 For autistic children and adults, five of those decide whether the app gets used.

Words that stay where the hand expects them

Many autistic children learn where a word lives before they can read it. When more is always in the same corner, the hand goes there without searching. Look for a fixed grid, and a way to hide words that keeps their space. Be wary of pages that re-sort themselves by how often a word is used: every move undoes what the hand learned.

Start small, grow in the same places

Twelve big buttons are easier on day one. Sixty words let a child say “I don’t like that” instead of only “juice”. The better apps let you show a few words first and reveal more over months, each in the spot it will always have.

Whole phrases on one button

Many autistic children talk in chunks first: a line from a show, or “do you want a snack?” meaning I want a snack. This is echolalia, and some SLPs build on it with an approach called gestalt language processing. The research on that approach is still early, so be careful with any app sold as made for “gestalt learners”. What you can check is simple: can one button say a whole phrase, can you record a family voice saying it the way your child hears it, and can you keep the phrases your child already uses?

A voice they accept

Some children push a tablet away because the voice sounds wrong to them. Check how many voices come with the app, whether you can change the speed, and whether a parent or sibling can record a button.

Offline, locked and charged

An app that needs Wi-Fi goes quiet in the car and at the park. An app a child can leave in two taps turns into a video player. These sound like small things, and they decide whether the tablet is still in use a month from now.

Before price, ask each app three questions: do the words stay put, can it grow, and does it work offline and lock down?

Will an app stop my child learning to talk?

No. It is the worry that delays AAC most often, so here is what the research found:

AAC doesn’t hold speech back, it may help a little, and its first job is a way to communicate today. Our guide to AAC and autism answers the other questions parents ask.

What each app costs over three years

A child uses an AAC app for years, so a monthly price that looks small can end up costing more than a $299.99 app. The app alone, without a tablet, at the listed prices:

Two things the table can’t show. First, what happens if you stop paying: TD Snap needs its monthly plan to speak after the trial,17 and Avaz removes pictures and audio when a trial or plan ends.20 Ask any maker, in writing, “if we cancel, does the voice still work?” Second, the tablet: the iPad-only apps need an iPad, while the Android apps run on tablets, phones and Chromebooks across a wide range of prices. More on plans in AAC apps without a subscription.

Which app for which situation

An iPad, and lots of words to grow into

Proloquo2Go is the app most US school SLPs already know, which helps when home and school have to agree. It runs on Apple devices only and has no free version.46 Ask the SLP or your state’s device loan program to let you try it first.39

A motor-planning approach

LAMP Words for Life and Speak for Yourself give every word one fixed path of taps. Both are iPad apps at $299.99, and LAMP Words for Life has a free 30-day trial edition.71011 They work best when the SLP and the school use the same approach.

Android, without paying every month

Avaz AAC has pictures and a keyboard. If your child takes to it, its lifetime plan beats paying every month.

CoughDrop keeps one board in step across Android, iPad and a web browser, handy when school and home use different devices.

Tap AAC (ours) has 2,600+ pictures drawn in one style, ready-made vocabularies whose core words never move, and a voice, Bella, that needs no internet.

No budget yet

A free app is a good way to learn how your child likes to communicate. If they take off, check whether it can grow with them before you spend months building pages in it. See free AAC apps for Android for what each free version leaves out.

Cboard also runs in a web browser, so you can try AAC on a laptop today.

Weave Chat AAC runs on Android, Apple devices and Kindle tablets, and starts with an account.

Autistic teens and adults who can spell

Many autistic adults speak some days and not others, and a typing app that opens fast is often the best fit. Read AAC for autistic adults on why part-time AAC is normal.42

Speech Assistant AAC is a plain typing screen with phrase buttons, cheap and offline.

Spoken is free to speak and guesses the next word as you type.

Not sure yet? Tap AAC is free for 30 days on any Android tablet, phone or Chromebook, with no account and no ads, then $29.99 once.26 Or print a free core word board and start modeling tonight.

A two-week trial that tells you something

Most apps have a trial or a free version, so a planned test costs nothing:

  1. Pick two apps, not five: one your SLP knows, one that fits your device and budget.
  2. Put the same 20 to 30 words in both: core words like more, stop, go, help, all done, want, not, plus five of your child’s favorite things.
  3. Use each for a week in real routines: snack, bath, the car, the playground. Not at a table.
  4. Model, don’t test. Touch the words yourself as you talk (“more bubbles!”) without asking your child to copy. Reviews of aided modeling find it generally helps children communicate.45 The AAC modeling at home handout fits on one page.
  5. Note three things each day: words your child touched on their own, whether they tried to leave the app, and whether you found it a pain to edit.
  6. Keep the one your family will actually use. Your patience with the app matters as much as your child’s.

A typical log: in week one, on the free app, the child touches more and bubbles on their own. In week two, on the fuller app, they keep pressing Home and getting out. Locking the screen (below) fixes that in five minutes. Without the log, it would be easy to decide that AAC “didn’t work”.

Stop them leaving the app, and stop adults deleting words

Two problems come up again and again in parent and SLP forums: a child who leaves the app in seconds, and a well-meaning adult who deletes buttons the child had learned.

On an iPad: Guided Access

In Settings, go to Accessibility, tap Guided Access and turn it on, with a passcode. Then open the AAC app and triple-click the top button (or the Home button on older iPads), and tap Start.46

On Android: app pinning

Turn on App pinning in Settings (usually under Security, then Advanced), open the AAC app, go to Overview, tap the app’s icon and tap Pin.47 In Tap AAC, Keep on screen (Settings › Lock & app pinning) pins it again every time it opens.24

Protect the words, not just the screen

Who pays for it

You may not have to pay yourself. In the US:

Outside the US: in England, NHS-funded specialised AAC services take referrals through local services for people with the most complex needs.50 In Australia, an NDIS plan can fund assistive technology, with written evidence or approval for the more costly items.51 In Ontario, the Assistive Devices Program helps pay for communication aids.52 The full US walk-through is in how to get an AAC device.

Questions parents ask

Which AAC app is best for a nonverbal autistic child?

The one whose words stay in fixed places, that works offline, and that your child can carry everywhere. On an iPad that is often Proloquo2Go or LAMP Words for Life; on Android, Avaz, CoughDrop or Tap AAC, or a free app such as Cboard to start.

Is there a free AAC app for autism?

Yes. Cboard and Weave Chat have free picture versions, and Speech Assistant AAC and Spoken are free for people who type. Proloquo2Go has no free version; LAMP Words for Life has a free 30-day trial edition.

Does Proloquo2Go work on Android?

No. It runs on Apple devices only and isn’t on Google Play.5 On an Android tablet, look at the Android apps in the table above.

Will insurance pay for an AAC app?

Sometimes, usually after an SLP evaluation. Medicaid covers medically necessary equipment, with the widest cover for under-21s, private plans vary, and the school has to consider assistive technology in the IEP.
