AAC apps without a subscription: pay once, and what the others add up to

Apps you pay for once

One payment on Google Play (October 30, 2026)

“One payment” here means the store sells it as a single purchase and the listing doesn’t mention a subscription. Speech Assistant AAC says it plainly: “a one-time payment for these extra features, there is no subscription”.² So do CM Games’ app (“Premium – One-Time Unlock (No Subscription)”)¹ and ours.⁶

What it adds up to

An AAC app is used for years, so the price after three years matters more than the price on day one. These are the listed prices, multiplied out:

A subscription isn’t always the worse deal. If you only need an app for a few weeks, after surgery for example, a month or two of a plan, or a free trial, costs less than any one-time price. And a lifetime price can pay for itself in two or three years.

What happens when you stop paying

This is the question to ask before you build a vocabulary in any app. What the makers say:

• Avaz: “Expiry of trial or subscription will result in the absence of images and audio from the app”, until a purchase is made.¹⁴
• Spoken: speaking stays free, but saved phrases and the lifelike voices are Premium, and free users are switched to a lower-quality fallback voice when the trial ends.¹¹¹³²²
• CoughDrop: functions become limited after the two-month trial.¹⁷
• Cboard: the free version stays; the subscription features stop.¹⁸¹⁹
• TD Snap (iPad and Windows, not Android): a monthly subscription is required for speech after the trial.²³
• Tap AAC (ours): after the 30-day trial it asks to be unlocked before it opens again. Nothing is deleted: the book waits on the tablet, and a backup can still be saved from the unlock screen.²⁴

Buying once on Google Play

• The purchase belongs to the Google account that paid. CommBoards’ listing puts it simply: “Premium follows the Google account you buy with”.²⁰ Buy with the account that will stay on the person’s tablet.
• On a new tablet, sign in to Google Play with the same account, then use the app’s restore option if it has one (in Tap AAC it’s called Restore purchase).
• Back up the vocabulary as well: the purchase comes back, but the person’s own pages and recordings only come back from a backup or an account. Check how each app backs up before you rely on it.
• Funding: tablets and apps count as non-dedicated devices, and payers’ coverage of them varies.²⁵ See how to get an AAC device.

When a subscription is worth it

Some things cost the maker money every month, and a subscription pays for them: online voices, cloud sync between several devices, a team sharing one vocabulary, and regular new content. If those matter to you, compare plans on what they include, not only the price. In Tap AAC, sharing a book with a therapist needs a free Google sign-in, not a plan.²⁶
