Inside the app, Help on the front screen has guided tours and how-tos that are read aloud.

Common questions

How do I back up the book, or move it to a new tablet?

Open Settings › Backup & reset and choose Save a backup to Files (or Share a backup). That writes the whole book (every page, button, picture, recording, saved button, saved phrase and quick phrase, plus the word diary and the words the person typed) to one file. Videos on buttons and recorded messages stay on the tablet. Keep that file somewhere safe, off the tablet.

On the new tablet, install Tap AAC, open Settings › Backup & reset and choose Restore from a backup. The book that was there is kept first, under Settings › Backup & reset › Earlier copies.

Please save a backup before changing devices or uninstalling: uninstalling deletes everything the app stored, and a backup file is the only way to get a book back. If you sign in with Google and put the book in your account, you can also choose Use a book from my account on the new tablet.

How do I get my purchase back on a new tablet?

The purchase belongs to the Google account that bought it. On a new tablet, or after reinstalling, sign in to Google Play with that same account, then tap Restore purchase, on the unlock screen or under Settings › About & purchase.

Restoring the purchase unlocks the app; to bring your pages back too, restore a backup as described above.

What is the editing PIN?

Settings › Lock & app pinning › Protect editing puts a four-digit PIN on Edit pages, Page library and Settings, so the book can't be changed by accident by the person using it. Talking, Find and the sentence bar never need the PIN. Forgot the PIN? asks a grown-up question instead.

With Protect editing on, buying and saving a backup from the unlock screen also ask for the PIN, so nobody can start a purchase by mistake.

To keep Tap AAC on the screen, Settings › Lock & app pinning › Keep on screen uses Android's screen pinning. To leave it, swipe up from the bottom and hold (or hold Back and Overview together).

How does switch scanning work?

Switch scanning is for a person who can't point. Settings › Touch & switches › Switch scanning puts a blue frame on the buttons: a row at a time, then the buttons in that row (or one button at a time). Pressing a switch does what a tap on the framed button would.

With one switch, the frame moves by itself. With two, one switch moves it and the other chooses.

A switch is anything that sends a key: a switch box, a Bluetooth button, even a camera remote. Pair it in Android's Bluetooth settings, then press Teach it in Tap AAC and press the switch. Or let a tap anywhere on the screen be the switch; then holding the screen for 3 seconds pauses scanning so a helper can use it.

What happens when the 30-day free trial ends?

For the first 30 days everything in the app is free, with no limits. The front screen shows how many days are left. After that, Tap AAC shows its unlock screen until it is bought: one payment of $29.99 through Google Play, not a subscription.

Nothing is deleted when the trial ends. The book, photos and recordings wait on the tablet, a backup can still be saved from the unlock screen, and unlocking opens everything just as it was.

Does Tap AAC need the internet?

No. Talking, Bella's voice, the pictures and editing all work offline. The internet is used for the purchase, which Google Play makes and checks, and, only if you sign in, for keeping the book in your account and sharing it.

How do I share the book with a speech therapist?

Sharing is optional. Open Settings › Account & sharing, sign in with Google and put the book in your account. Then invite someone who can edit, or who can only look. They get a one-time code that works once and runs out after 7 days.

On a computer, the team can also use the book at tapaac.com/app, where the owner can invite people with a link or a QR code. There is more on the page for speech therapists.

What goes online if I sign in?

The book's pages, buttons, photos and recordings, so you can use it on another tablet and the people you invite can see it. Settings, quick phrases, saved buttons and phrases, videos and recorded messages stay on each tablet, and the word diary never goes into the shared book. The privacy policy has the details.

How do I delete my account?

In Tap AAC, open Settings › Account & sharing and choose Delete my account. It deletes the account and the books it owns from the cloud; the book on the tablet stays. You can also email support@lmnoplabs.fun.

What does Word Guesses learn, and can I turn it off?

Once about 200 words have been said, Word Guesses (and the typing screen’s guesses) offer the person’s own words first: the words they say after other words, their usual first words, and names or favorite things they type. Words shown while Modeling is on are never learned.

It is on to start. Turn it off, or clear what it learned, in Settings › Word diary & reports › Word guesses. What it learned stays on the tablet; Android’s own backup of the app includes it.

Does Tap AAC work on a phone, a foldable or a Chromebook?

Yes. Tap AAC runs on Android phones, tablets, foldables and Chromebooks with Android 8.0 or later, upright or on its side, and in a resizable window. A page’s buttons never change places when the screen turns or the window changes size.

With a keyboard, start typing to open the typing screen; Enter speaks the sentence and Esc closes a menu. A mouse works too: a right-click does what a long press does.
