Tap AAC

AAC apps for Android: which suits whom, and what each costs

There is no single best AAC app for Android: it depends on whether the person types or needs pictures, how they can touch the screen, and the budget. For typing, Speech Assistant AAC is cheap and works offline, and Spoken is free to start. For pictures, Cboard and Weave Chat have free versions, and Avaz, CoughDrop and Tap AAC (ours) are fuller paid apps. Look to Speak works with the eyes. Proloquo2Go, TouchChat, LAMP Words for Life and TD Snap aren’t on Google Play.

We make Tap AAC, and it is in this list, so read our part with that in mind. We don’t rank the apps, and several suit some people better than ours: a cheaper typing app for someone who spells, a free app for a tight budget, an eye-gaze app for someone who can’t touch the screen. Store facts were checked on October 30, 2026.

Start with the person

A speech-language pathologist matches the person’s skills and needs to an app’s features: the kind of symbols, the display, how they select, the voice, portability, room to grow, their own preference, and cost and upkeep.1 Three questions narrow the list fast:

  1. Can the person spell? If yes, a typing app with word prediction is usually fastest. If not, or not yet, they need picture buttons.
  2. How can they touch the screen? A fingertip, a fist, a stylus, a switch, their eyes or their head.
  3. What can you spend, once or every month, and for how long? See AAC apps without a subscription and free AAC apps for Android.

If the person can type

Speech Assistant AAC

A plain, fast typing screen with phrase buttons you set up yourself. The basic version is free, the extra features are one payment, and the listing says it needs no internet connection.2

Spoken

Typing with next-word prediction. Speaking is free for good; Premium adds saved phrases, lifelike voices and prediction that learns from how you talk.30 Those voices need the internet; offline, Spoken uses the phone’s own voice.7

Predictable

A typing app from Therapy Box, a single purchase with no free version. Its maker says some languages rely on online word prediction and online voices.8

If the person needs pictures

Cboard

A picture board that also runs in a web browser. It was free for almost six years; now some features, such as online voices, voice recordings on buttons and board sharing, need a monthly or yearly plan.1213

Weave Chat AAC

Free, “and always will be”, on Android, Apple devices and Kindle; you create an account to start, and the paid parts are optional web tools for editing and sharing boards.1516

Avaz AAC

Pictures and a keyboard, with a 14-day free trial. Its maker says that when a trial or subscription ends, the pictures and audio disappear from the app until you buy.18

CoughDrop

Runs on almost anything, including Android, iPad, Chromebooks and web browsers, so a family can use the same boards on different devices. It needs an account and works offline once boards are synced.3322

Tap AAC (ours)

Pictures, a full-screen keyboard and Word Guesses (a page of the words most likely to come next) in one app. Its voice is built in, so it talks with no internet and no account, and core words stay in the same place as the vocabulary grows.23 It is free for 30 days and then $29.99 once; after the trial it asks to be unlocked before it opens.24 It is English only, and Android only.

If touching the screen is hard

Eye gaze and switch set-ups are worth an assessment: a speech-language pathologist or an occupational therapist can test what works for the person’s body.

Not on Android

Some of the best-known AAC apps run only on Apple devices or Windows: Proloquo2Go, TouchChat, LAMP Words for Life, TD Snap and Speak for Yourself. None of them came up when we searched Google Play for their names.35 See what to use on Android instead.

How we chose these apps

We started from our own count of every AAC app with at least 50 ratings in either store (October 18, 2026). From those on Google Play and updated there in the last year, we chose twelve to cover the main kinds of app (typing, full picture vocabularies, eyes and head) at every price. That is our choice, not a ranking, and it leaves out apps that may suit someone better. Apps not updated on Google Play for more than a year were left out; Leeloo AAC, for example, was last updated there on July 2, 2023.36 On October 30, 2026 we read each chosen app’s Google Play listing and its maker’s help pages for the price, the plans, what works without internet and the last update. We haven’t tested every app with real users.
