Offline AAC apps: which ones talk with no internet

Most AAC apps on Android can talk without internet, but “offline” means different things. Some do everything on the tablet (Speech Assistant AAC, TalkTablet PRO, CommBoards, CM Games’ app and Tap AAC, ours). Some need a first sign-in or sync (CoughDrop, Avaz). Some keep talking offline but with a plainer voice (Spoken, Cboard’s online voices). For some, the maker doesn’t say. Test any app in airplane mode first.

We make Tap AAC, which talks with no internet, so offline use is a point we care about. What we say about other apps is what their makers say, quoted, from listings and help pages read on October 30, 2026; we haven’t tested every app offline ourselves.

Why it matters

A person who uses AAC needs their voice everywhere: in a hospital room where the Wi-Fi asks for a sign-in, at a school that blocks apps on its network, in the car, on a plane, at a campsite, during a power cut. An app that goes quiet without a connection is a voice that goes quiet. Our page on apps for a hospital stay has more on the hospital side.

Four kinds of “offline”

Reading each maker’s own words, the apps fall into four groups:

1. Everything on the tablet

The listing says it talks with no connection at all:

The listing or maker says it talks with no connection (October 30, 2026)

Tap AAC (ours)Pictures, typing and Word Guesses1Yes: its voice, Bella, is part of the app2Free for 30 days, then $29.99 once

CommBoards AACPictures6Yes: “no internet for core talking”Starter boards free; Premium in-app $9.99 to $119.99, with a 7-day free trial

2. Offline after a first sign-in or sync

These work offline once an account is set up and the vocabulary is on the device. CoughDrop “syncs your vocabulary set to your local device” and can “function whether or not you are connected to the Internet”, though not every feature works offline.10 Avaz says internet “is not required for regular usage”, but is needed to sign in once, for cloud backup and image search.11 Context AAC “works without internet after setup”.12

Offline once set up
AppWithout internetPrice (US)
CoughDropYes, once boards are synced to the device; some features need internet10$9 a month or $295 for life, after a free two-month trial13
Avaz AACYes for everyday use; its Expressive voices need internet11US Google Play listing: a 14-day trial, then in-app purchases of $1.99 to $299.99 (it names monthly, yearly and lifetime plans, not their prices). Avaz’s help centre lists $9.99 a month, $99.99 a year or $199.99 for life, with different prices by region1415
Context AAC (Weave Chat)Yes: “works without internet after setup”12$14.99 once

3. Offline, but some voices or features need the internet

These keep talking, but their best voices, or some languages, live on the internet. Spoken: “When you lose connection… your chosen voice will switch to a fallback — a lower quality voice built into your phone”.16 Cboard warns when an online voice is chosen with no connection; its boards are “cached for offline use”.17 Avaz’s Expressive voices need internet too,11 and Predictable’s maker says some languages rely on online word prediction and online voices.18 For these apps, pick a voice that lives on the phone (see offline text to speech on Android) and get used to it, so the voice doesn’t change in the middle of a hard day.

4. Not stated

For Weave Chat AAC, Leeloo AAC, Look to Speak and Vocable AAC, we couldn’t find a current statement from the maker about using the app with no internet.25262728 That doesn’t mean they don’t work offline; it means you should test them.

A five-minute offline test

Run it at home, with the vocabulary the person really uses:

  1. Switch on airplane mode and turn Wi-Fi off.
  2. Close the app completely and open it again: some apps check an account when they start.
  3. Tap a single word, build and speak a sentence, and type a new word that isn’t on any button.
  4. Play a button with a recorded voice and one with a photo you added.
  5. Edit a button: change its word and picture, and save.
  6. Listen: is it the same voice as when you were online?
  7. Restart the tablet and do it once more.

If anything fails, look in the app’s settings for an offline voice or an option to download content, and ask the maker before you pay.

What needs the internet in any app

In Tap AAC (ours), talking, Bella’s voice, the pictures and editing all work offline. The internet is used for the purchase, which Google Play makes and checks, and, only if you sign in, for keeping the book in your account and sharing it.29
