Everyday AAC boards for adults: work, errands and groceries

These AAC communication boards are for teens and adults who don’t speak, or don’t speak much, in the places of everyday adult life: at work, at an appointment, at the pharmacy and the bank, on the bus, at the store, on the phone and in the kitchen. All eight are free to print, use adult wording, and have pictures of things and places, not children.

Each board is one page with yes, no and not sure where they’re needed. Print the PDF, or add the board to the Tap AAC app, where every button on the page says its words out loud.

Every board is also a ready-made page in the Tap AAC app, under the name in the last column: search the app’s Page library for it. Printed together, the 8 boards make a small communication book on this topic: keep them in a binder or folder, with the one used most at the front (tips for communication books).

Using the boards as an adult

  1. Show the board early. Start with I use this board to talk or Please wait for me, so the other person knows to slow down and watch.
  2. Keep the one you need on top. A clear sleeve or a small binder with the bank, pharmacy and bus boards fits in a bag; take out the one for where you are going.
  3. Write on it. Add your stop, your pharmacy, the name of your support person, and the tasks of your own job.
  4. For family and support workers: point only when asked to, and don’t answer for the person. Give them time.

For a general board with needs, feelings and people, see the communication board for adults. The longer pages for errands, with steps and cards, are the pharmacy board, the bank and money board, the city bus visual schedule and the work visual schedule.

All the boards are free to print and share (terms of use). The “Add to Tap AAC” files are Open Board Format (.obz) files: Tap AAC opens each one as the printed page, and other AAC apps that open .obz files show it as a grid of buttons. How to add a board to Tap AAC.

These boards and guides are general information, not therapy or medical advice, and they don’t replace a speech therapist. A speech therapist who knows the person can help choose the right words, pictures and layout. The boards are free to print and share; please don’t sell them (terms of use).
