WH questions visual, colors and numbers: free AAC boards
A WH questions visual puts who, what, where, when, why and how on one page, with whole questions to point to and ways to answer: I don’t know, let me think. This page has a free printable question words board and three more boards for learning: opposites, colors and shapes, and numbers 1 to 20 with counting words.
Each board is one page. Print the PDF, or add the board to the Tap AAC app, where every button on the page says its words out loud.
Question words
The six question words in a row, twelve ready questions (what’s that?, how many?, what happened?, are you okay?), ways to answer (yes, no, I don’t know, let me think), and a row for finding out more: I have a question, tell me, show me, say it again.

Opposites
Twelve pairs of opposites side by side, so the person points to one and then its pair: big and little, hot and cold, full and empty, in and out, same and different. The last words, more, not, very and too much, change any of them.

The 4 boards at a glance
| Board | Buttons | Pages | Name in the Tap AAC app |
|---|---|---|---|
| Question words | 30 | 1 | “Question words” |
| Opposites | 30 | 1 | “Opposites” |
| Colors and shapes | 32 | 1 | “Colors and shapes” |

Every board is also a ready-made page in the Tap AAC app, under the name in the last column: search the app’s Page library for it. Printed together, the 4 boards make a small communication book on this topic: keep them in a binder or folder, with the one used most at the front (tips for communication books).
How to use the WH questions visual
- Ask with the board, not just your voice. Point to where as you ask “Where is the cat?” Seeing the question word helps the person understand what kind of answer you want.
- Give the answers a place too. Point out I don’t know and let me think. Both are good answers, and they are better than a guess.
- Turn it around. Let the person ask you. Children who use AAC are asked many questions and get few chances to ask their own.
- Start with what and where, which most children learn first, and add why and how later.
Games with the other boards
Play “find it” with the colors and shapes board: one person names a color and a shape, the other finds something in the room that matches. Use the numbers board with a real die in any board game, pointing to the number before moving. The opposites board works with toys and the bath: full and empty cups, wet and dry towels, on and off the light.
For classroom routines there is the classroom visual schedule, and for the day, date and weather, the weather and calendar board.
All the boards are free to print and share (terms of use). The “Add to Tap AAC” files are Open Board Format (.obz) files: Tap AAC opens each one as the printed page, and other AAC apps that open .obz files show it as a grid of buttons. How to add a board to Tap AAC.
These boards and guides are general information, not therapy or medical advice, and they don’t replace a speech therapist.
