Home communication boards: clothes, bedroom and TV time
Home communication boards give someone who doesn’t speak, or doesn’t speak much, words for the everyday parts of home: what to wear, what they need at night, helping at the table, calling family and screen time. This page has five free boards to print, from a clothes communication board with too tight and itchy to five more minutes on the tablet.
Each board is one page. Print the PDF, or add the board to the Tap AAC app, where every button on the page says its words out loud.
My clothes
Eighteen clothes with I want at the top, and the words for when clothes don’t feel right: too big, too small, too tight, itchy, wet. Zip, button and tie my shoes ask for the help that’s needed.

My bedroom
Things in the room, and what a person needs at night: lights off, door open, too dark, I’m scared, I had a bad dream, I can’t sleep, read to me. Keep it by the bed, where those words are needed.

Setting the table
Eight numbered steps to a ready table, from wash hands to dinner’s ready!, and a second row for after the meal: clear my plate, dishes in the sink, wipe the table, push in my chair. A first household job a child can do every day.

Calling family
Who to call, and what to say on the call: hello, how are you?, I miss you, look at this, I can’t hear you, see you later. On a video call, hold the board up so the other person can see it.

Tablet and TV time
Choose what to watch or play, take turns, and say when it isn’t working (it’s not working, charge it, louder). When time’s up, the last row has six things to do next, from board game to play outside, which can make the switch easier.

Printed together, the 5 boards make a small communication book on this topic: keep them in a binder or folder, with the one used most at the front (tips for communication books).
How to use the home boards
- One board, one place. The clothes board inside the closet door, the bedroom board by the bed, the table board on the fridge, the screen time board by the TV.
- Use it at the moment it’s needed. Hold up two shirts and point to this one; point to five more minutes before the timer goes, not after.
- Make it about this home. Glue a photo of the real grandma over the picture, cross out what your family doesn’t have, and write in what’s missing.
- Count the small words. Itchy, too dark and it’s not working can head off a hard moment, because the person can say what’s wrong.
For the steps of getting dressed there is the getting dressed visual schedule, and for bedtime, the bedtime routine chart.
All the boards are free to print and share (terms of use). The “Add to Tap AAC” files are Open Board Format (.obz) files: Tap AAC opens each one as the printed page, and other AAC apps that open .obz files show it as a grid of buttons. How to add a board to Tap AAC.
These boards and guides are general information, not therapy or medical advice, and they don’t replace a speech therapist. A speech therapist who knows the person can help choose the right words, pictures and layout. The boards are free to print and share; please don’t sell them (terms of use).
