Easter, Valentine’s Day and more: holiday AAC boards

Holiday AAC boards let someone who doesn’t speak, or doesn’t speak much, join in a celebration: say Happy Easter!, hunt for eggs (I found one!), give a card (this is for you) or say the fireworks are too loud. Here are six free holiday communication boards to print, from Valentine’s Day and Easter to the Fourth of July, plus one board for Lunar New Year, Diwali and Eid.

Each board is one page. Cross out what your family doesn’t do, or glue a photo over it. Print the PDF, or add the board to the Tap AAC app, where every button on the page says its words out loud.

Valentine’s Day

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day

One board for both days: Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa, twelve things to do together (breakfast, help at home, picnic, sing a song) and you’re the best. It works for anyone who looks after the child.

Lunar New Year, Diwali and Eid

A row for each festival (dumplings and red envelopes; lamps and rangoli; Eid prayers and new clothes, with each greeting), a row for what families often do at all three (visit family, a big meal, lights), and words to talk about it. Cross out what your family doesn’t do, or add your own.

How to use the holiday boards

  1. Bring it out a few days before. Look at the board together and talk about what will happen: “On Sunday there’s an egg hunt.”
  2. Make it your family’s holiday. Cross out what you don’t do, and glue on a photo of your own basket, table or flag.
  3. Give the greeting a turn. Let the person be the one to point to Happy Easter! or Eid Mubarak! when the family arrives.
  4. Plan for the hard parts. Crowds, fireworks and late nights are part of many holidays; point out too loud and go inside before you go, and honor them on the day.
